My Scar

Have you ever had a scar? Well I have! Here’s a story about when I got a scar:

It was a beautiful afternoon, my cousin and I were playing basketball on my mini court.  Of course we were playing rough and I was pretty fast.  My cousins and I were playing and playing then time went by.

Suddenly, I shouted, "Whoa!"  I fell to the ground.  It was my brother or cousin that pushed me on the hard ground. Tears came out of my eyes, but I wasn't crying.  

I got two scratches one on my arm and one on my knee. The one on my knee hurt a lot more than the one on my arm. My mom got me patched up, and I felt a lot better. 

That's the time when I got a scar. Hey, remember everyone gets them. You’re not alone.

My Scar

Ouch! Have you ever gotten a scar? Well, I have.  Scars make you look cool, therefore I love my scar. I'm going to tell you how I got my scar. I hope you enjoy my story!

When I was little, I went  to a house with my mommy.  I was having a good time.  The house had a dog. I really liked the dog. It was so cute!

Then the unthinkable happened. I went to pet the dog, when suddenly, I found myself sitting on the ground crying! I got bitten by the dog on my right eye. I forgot exactly why it happened, but it did. 

My mommy took me to the hospital.  When I got to the hospital, I was scared. I didn't know if the stitches would hurt or not. Finally, I got the stitches.  After that, me and my mommy went back home. 

Today, I still have the scar. I'm nine now, my dad told me I looked cool with it. I agreed. He made me feel much better. I'm beautiful and still have this scar.  Now you know all about my scar. If you have a scar, or in the future get a scar, just think that it makes you cool.

The Scar On My Arm

Do you have a scar? Scars enable you to be different and unique in your own way. Why don't you get comfortable, stay, and learn about the scar on my arm? 

I got that scar when I was seven.  I was reading a book and swoosh! I cut my arm!  After I got cut, I couldn't stop picking at the scab. Over time, the scab got smaller and smaller! Then one day, I woke up and saw that there was a scare where my scab had been. Later, I got tan and now the scar is the color of my skin. It turns out I forgot about it until just now! 

Now you know about the scar on my arm.  The scar makes me different and unique!

Enrichment Support Update

2/11/16

      Last week, Mrs. Woods began pushing into Mrs. Duffee's fourth grade classroom and working with eight students.  These eight students are performing at or above grade level according to their most recent iReady Reading Diagnostic Assessment and will benefit from enrichment in English/Language Arts.   

     Our small group read the article, "Vitamin G for Your Mind" by Melissa Abramovitz.  Students learned what "vitamin G" is, it's benefits, and the importance of green time.  Students learned the vocabulary words: stimulate, momentum, regulate, innovative, and flourish.
     Students also engaged in text dependent analysis when they discussed and wrote the answer to the question, "How might studying at the Walden Project help kids with nature deficit disorder?  Support your answer with evidence from the text."  

     Students learned a lot from this informational article and were inspired to spend some time in nature getting some vitamin G of their own.
     In the coming weeks, we will continue studying vocabulary and reading informational texts on a sixth and seventh grade reading level.  We will also engage in all aspects of the writing process culminating in publishing the student authors' work on this blog!

Mardis Gras

Mardi Gras is a family event.  Mardis Gras takes place in New Orleans.  Mardis Gras is celebrated on the second Tuesday in February.  People celebrate Mardis Gras because it is almost Lent.  People celebrate Mardis Gras with food, drinks, and costumes.  Mardis Gras is important because it’s almost Lent.

    Mardi Gras is a time for family, food, and friends. Millions of people and families celebrate Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras is celebrated on the second Tuesday of February known as Fat Tuesday.  Mardis Gras is  celebrated in New Orleans. Mardi Gras is celebrated because people want to have as much fun as they can before Lent.  Mardi Gras is celebrated with parades and costumes.  Mardi Gras’s colors are green, purple, and gold.  Mardi Gras's special because it's right before Lent and people need that time to have fun before giving up something for Lent.

 New Year = New Projects 

Enrichment Support students at East Pike are working on preparations for their film: Aliens Come to Earth. They have written the script, created props, designed their costumes, practiced their blocking, and created some interesting backgrounds for each of the scenes. 

Enrichment Support students at Horace Mann just learned some of the basics of architectural design from one of our student's fathers who is an architect and interior designer.  "Triangulation" is the key they discovered to strong solid building.  Students will apply what they have learned to their upcoming K'NEX competition.
